Water Protection Guide

What Should You Do When You Find a Water Leak at Home?

Finding water where it should not be is stressful, but the first few minutes matter.

Find the source, stop the water if it is safe to do so, and prevent additional damage.

If you cannot safely identify or control the leak, contact a qualified plumber.

1. Find Where the Water Is Coming From

First, try to identify the source.

Check nearby:

  • Supply lines
  • Faucets
  • Toilets
  • Washing machines
  • Water heaters
  • Appliances connected to water

Water can travel away from the original leak, so the location of the visible water may not be the actual source.

2. Stop Using the Affected Fixture

If the leak is coming from a specific appliance or fixture, stop using it until the source has been identified.

For example, if water is coming from a washing machine supply hose, stop the machine and isolate the water supply if you can safely do so.

3. Shut Off the Water

For a larger or continuing leak, shutting off the water can help prevent additional damage.

If you know the local shut-off valve, use it.

For a larger plumbing problem, you may need to shut off the home's main water supply.

Important

If water is near electrical outlets, appliances, or wiring, avoid contact with electrical equipment and seek professional help when necessary.

4. Protect the Area

Once the water source is under control, move furniture, boxes, electronics, and other items away from the affected area if it is safe.

Remove standing water as soon as practical.

5. Look for Hidden Moisture

Even after the visible water is cleaned up, check nearby areas for signs of moisture.

Look at:

  • Cabinets
  • Flooring
  • Walls
  • Baseboards
  • Areas behind appliances

A small leak that appears to be fixed may have already allowed water to reach hidden areas.

6. Find Out Why the Leak Happened

Cleaning up the water is only the first step.

The underlying problem could be:

  • A damaged hose
  • A loose connection
  • A failed valve
  • A worn plumbing component
  • An appliance problem
  • A pipe leak

Fix the source before returning the affected appliance or fixture to normal use.

7. Think About What Happens If You're Not Home

A leak is much harder to deal with when nobody is there to find it.

A water leak sensor can detect water in high-risk locations.

An automatic shut-off system can take the next step by closing the main water supply when a leak is detected.

What Should You Do After a Leak?

Once the immediate problem is under control:

1. Identify the cause
2. Repair the source
3. Check for hidden water damage
4. Replace damaged components if necessary
5. Consider how the leak could be detected earlier next time

A water leak may be impossible to predict, but having a detection and automatic shut-off system can reduce the time between a leak starting and the water being stopped.
